The Best Cabin Getaways: Mammoth Lakes, California

I want to escape to a cabin in the woods. I'm looking for someplace that's really isolated, but close to lots of recreation and a small town where I can grab a decent bite to eat. What do you recommend?

In the High Sierra around Mammoth Lakes, you can find everything from millionaire ski chalets to (if you look north toward June Lake and the entrance to Yosemite National Park) tree-shaded shacks surrounded by empty wilderness. The town itself is somewhat quieter in the summer, when the skiers are replaced by hikers and bikers, but still offers finer amenities than you’ll find at home—like world-class spa treatments, helicopter tours, and restaurants run by renowned chefs.

Taste of civilization: The chopped beef brisket sandwich at Angel’s BBQ is the tastiest in the West.
