Police officers in Charleville, Australia pepper sprayed a kangaroo that attacked an elderly woman in her backyard on Sunday. Phyllis Johnson, 94, was hanging laundry when the kangaroo kicked her and knocked her to the ground. “I thought it was going to kill me,” Johnson told the Courier-Mail. "Not even the dog would help, it was too frightened." Johnson fought the kangaroo away with a broom and crawled inside. Her son called police and tried to scare the kangaroo away. When two officers arrived, they were forced to pepper spray it—twice—in self defense. The animal, named Eddie, is a captive red kangaroo, a species that can grow to 200 pounds. Eddie escaped a private enclosure in Charleville and now faces euthanasia. Johnson, speaking from the hospital where she was admitted for scrapes and bruises, said she hoped he would be spared.
