Surfer Kelly Slater won the Hurley Pro at Trestles on Wednesday, fending off Australian Owen Wright to claim his fifth Hurley Pro title and strengthen his lead atop the World Tour standings. The event also marked the third consecutive ASP Dream Tour event in which Slater and Wright have competed in the final heat, sparking what could be a new surfing rivalry and simultaneously making ASP history: Never before have the same two surfers reached the finals in three consecutive events. Wright, 21, is in his sophomore year on the world tour and won his first event earlier this month at the Quiksilver Pro New York. Slater, who is 39 and among the oldest competitive surfers in the world, is a ten-time ASP world champion. His win at Trestles was his 48th elite ASP World Tour victory and third already this year.
