Fourteen-Year Old to Sail Around World Solo

A 14-year-old Dutch girl won a court's permission to attempt to sail around the world solo, the BBC reports.

Last August, the Dutch court placed Laura Dekker under state care to stall her plans of becoming the youngest person to circumnavigate the world unassisted. That title currently belongs to 16-year old Australian, Jessica Watson. To break Watson's record, Dekker will have to complete the two-year voyage before September 2012.

Now the coast is clear for Dekker's record-breaking attempt. Let's just hope her adventure doesn't turn out like 16-year old Californian, Abby Sunderland's solo sail; her mast broke, leaving her stranded for two days before a fishing boat plucked her up and brought her to safety.
