The World's Most Dangerous Travel

The Lunatic Express Outside contributor Carl Hoffman has a new book just out, The Lunatic Express, that recounts the unbelievable (but true!) adventures he experienced while traveling around the world on the most miserable and dangerous conveyances he could find. We knew the book was going to be something special, because we'd seen beforehand what Hoffman can do with this kind of material--back in 2007, he published a now-classic story in the magazine about Tim Roman, an overweight and overworked African bush pilot who will fly anybody and anything for money. To give you a sense of what's in store in The Lunatic Express, we're happily showcasing the old Roman story, along with an excerpt from the new book, a look at the incredibly dangerous commuter trains of Mumbai, India. Read it and tremble.
