The International Olympic Committee has granted full recognition to the International Federation of Sport Climbing, making climbing eligible for inclusion in the 2020 Summer Olympics. In recent years the sport has gained popularity, especially in Europe where climbing competitions attract thousands of spectators. John Bowles, a Canadian climbing champion who competes in Europe told The Globe and Mail, "It's like hockey is here." In the U.S., bouldering is drawing big crowds at events like the 2010 American Bouldering Series Nationals in Virginia (see video). The IOC also endorsed cricket and power boating as additions to the 2020 Summer Games. However, recognition is only the first hurdle: It won't be until 2013 -- when the 2020 location is announced -- that we'll know for sure what new sports are officially added.
