The Department of Interior is considering preserving 14 areas as National Monuments. Some state officials are angry they have not been consulted about the move. But a Department of Interior spokesperson has said these are merely ideas for National Monuments.

The areas under consideration include:

• the San Rafael Swell in Utah,

• New Mexico's Otero Mesa,

• Montana’s Northern Prairie,

• Heart of theGreat Basin in Nevada,

• Northwest Sonoran Desert in Arizona,

• Colorado's Vermillion Basin, and

• the San Juan Islands in Washington.
