The Route: Cantering for a week along the sandy shores of this boardsailing mecca's undeveloped Macanao Peninsula. You'll ride 50 miles in all. Unmounted pursuits include swimming, snorkeling, and gorging on freshly grilled dorado.

When to go: November through February

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel advisory: Switching from the international to the national airport in Caracas can be quite a hassle, especially if you don't speak Spanish. Be sure to stay alert: The airport's got plenty of pickpockets.

High/low points:

  • Feeling like a cheesy television ad for oldies records as you gallop at sunset through knee-deep surf — and loving every minute of it.
  • If the near-constant wind ever lulls, finally noticing that you're frying like a drumstick in the relentless tropical sun.
