Our Journey, Our Selves
By Lorien Warner

Some 300 outfitters now offer thousands of female-only trips worldwide. "Women today are finding that it can be more fun to hang with the 'girls' than compete with the boys," says Yvonne Lusetti of Adventure Travel for Women (541-386-2111), a women's travel service entering its second year of business. Here's a peek at what's new this winter. Trips include all but airfare.

New from Woodswomen (800-279-0555) is a Middle East foray. Base camp for the first week is Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, a resort town on the Red Sea, where you'll dive and snorkel with manta rays and hike in the Sinai desert. Then it's on to Israel for camel-trekking in the Eilat Mountains. March 9-March 23; $1,995 per person.

Adventure Destinations (800-376-9851) is Baja bound: you'll spend half your trip near La Paz mountain biking along the coast, the other half on Espiritu Santo Island in the Sea of Cortez sea kayaking, swimming, and hiking the canyons. October 26-November 3 and February 2-9; $695 per person.

You can sail away to the Windward Islands of the southern Caribbean with Rainbow Adventures (800-804-8686) on the 120-foot, 22-passenger schooner Regina Chatterina. When you're not actually under way, you'll snorkel and swim, snooze on white-sand beaches, and scale volcanic peaks. March 21-28; $1,495 per person.
