Adventure Adviser: I normally stick to a strict adventure-questions-only diet, Kim, but being a closet Civil War buff with a penchant for trivia, I can't resist this one. So here's the scoop: The Arlington historian tells me there are nearly 18,000 Civil War casualties buried in the national cemetery. As for Civil War veterans who survived the fighting and were later buried in Arlington, they account for about another 15,000. Robert E. Lee is in a crypt in Lee Chapel, on the grounds of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Call the university at 540-463-8400 for more information on visiting the chapel or latching on to a prospective students' tour of campus. While you're in the neighborhood, why not stop by the Stonewall Jackson House, also in Lexington (540-463-2552). Jackson was buried in a crypt at the house after being mortally wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, some 120 miles away. Ulysses S. Grant is buried, appropriately enough, in Grant's Tomb, just off Riverside Drive in Harlem, New York City. And finally: Yes, tours at West Point are open to the public. They leave from the visitor center, just outside Thayer Gate, and cost $5 per adult. During the summer and fall, tours run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and starting at 11 a.m. on Sundays. The winter schedule, which goes into effect in November, is scaled back to two one-hour tours a day. Call the visitor center at 914-938-4011 for more info.
