Where to stay for Bonaire diving
Question: I am going to Bonaire to scuba dive and windsurf. Do you know of any cheap places to stay there? Most of the dive-oriented shops have expensive accommodations.

Rest easy on Bonaire
Adventure Adviser: Captain Don's Habitat (800-327-6709) is the diving resort of choice for big spenders (doubles, $175 per night), but look into a four-day scuba package--$455 for two--and things start sounding a little more manageable. Dive-industry pioneer Don Stewart provides tanks 'round-the-clock, a fleet of dive boats, and ace guides for his guests, not to mention villa- and cottage-style rooms, a restaurant, and great beachfront.

For more reasonably priced digs, however, I'd suggest the no-frills Carib Inn a few miles outside of Kralendijik on the coast. Ten rooms, a small pool, and patio, and $79-$99 doubles pretty much guarantees a crowd of dive-enthusiasts; meals aren't included, so try to book one of the rooms with a small kitchen or plan on dining out in town. Call 011-599-7-8819 for details.

Other dive-oriented inns are the Leeward Inn Guest House (doubles, $60; 011-599-7-5517); Divi Flamingo Beach Resort ($84-$150; 800-367-3484); Buddy's Dive Resort ($75; 011-599-7-8647); and the Sunset Inn ($80-$120; 011-599-7-8818), which is only a short walk from several dive operations in Kralendijik. Call for details on dive and windsurf packages.

For windsurfing, check out Windsurfing Bonaire at Jibe City on Lac Bay, on the island's southeast coast. Weekly rates range from $225-$240, with board and kayak rentals at $30 per day. Call 800-748-8733 for more info.
