The Route: A 75-mile whitewater descent of a newly opened river festooned with Class III and IV rapids, with five of the world's ten highest peaks as a backdrop. The trip lasts 13 days.

When to go: November

Difficulty: Strenuous

Travel advisory: Don't neglect your lower-body conditioning; hiking to the put-in requires a tough four-day trek to above 8,000 feet.

High/low points:

  • You'll be invulnerable to misfortune because your raft has been doused with ceremonial chicken blood by your Nepalese guides.
  • Negotiating 50 rapids in less than four hours on day three of your descent.
