5 $1,100 rustic lodging

The Route: Spend seven days at a 100-year-old, 54,000-acre cattle ranch laced with dirt roads and singletrack trails on Hawaii's least-populated major island. You'll then make day rides from three remote but well-equipped camps.

When to go: March to May, September to October

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous

Travel advisory: If you bring your own bike, be sure to use Slime or a similar tube sealant. Nasty thorns from kiawe trees regularly puncture tires.

High/low points:

  • Biking technical sections of the Kukui Trail to Website, where ten miles of singletrack connect to give you multiple trail options.
  • Laboring through the rim-deep, wheel-sucking mud of The Bog in the Molokai Forest Preserve.
