The Route: A 14-day, 50-mile marine safari in expedition Kleppers, during which you'll assist a biologist with a wildlife survey and paddle alongside southern right whales, sea lions, and dolphins.

When to go: October to November

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel advisory: An interest in biology is a prerequisite for this trip. Most of your time will be spent counting every bird, whale, and guanaco in sight.

High/low points:

  • Standing on the beach a few yards away from a 30-ton right whale as it rolls, rubbing off dead skin on the rocky bottom.
  • Getting socked in on the beach for three days in 50-knot winds.
