The Route: Touring 320 miles on rudimentary roads. For two weeks you'll pedal from inn to inn through the small towns and countryside of this lush Caribbean island.

When to go: January, February, April, November, December

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel advisory: Because the United States bars air travel to Cuba, you'll have to fly to Havana via Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Mexico City, Cancún, or Nassau.

High/low points:

  • Being invited to a neighborhood lobster barbeque by a family in Pinar del Río.
  • Not being able to legally spend money in Cuba, unless you have a license to travel there from the U.S. government.
