Homemade fireworks are totally legal—in most states. Even better, there’s a group dedicated to them: the Pyrotechnics Guild International. This August, 3,000 amateur blasters descend on LaPorte, Indiana, for Fire in the Sky, the organization’s annual convention. A few of the seminars on offer:

1. Black Powder Rockets for Beginners
Pyrotechnic Chemistry of Sparks and Glitter
Hand-Rolled Chocked Rocket Casings and Time-Fuse Demos
Paul Biersach’s Dragon’s Breath
Fire Medicine for Pyros
