The Route: Thirty-three days and 240 miles of trekking from Chamonix to Nice through the mountain terrain along GR 5, one of Europe's premier long-distance trails. Stay along the way in hiker's huts and village gîtes.

When to go: August to September

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous

Travel advisory: This trip is offered in three sections of eight, 12, and 13 days. Hikers with limited time may sign up for one or two of the legs.

High/low points:

  • Staying in refreshingly untouristed villages where residents still farm potatoes, make goat cheese, and chop wood for a living.
  • Encountering the sprawling development of Tignes ski resort after a solitary day of hiking.
