With upwards of 35 first-place finishes, 36-year-old Hobie Call has won more obstacle races than anyone. His secret? Smart training, sure. But Call also swears by his wheatgrass smoothies—so much so that he blended and gave away 1,500 of them at the 2012 Utah Spartan Beast. “What makes it so great is that it has everything: high quality vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, fats, protein, carbohydrates, and fiber,” says Call, from Erda, Utah. Wheatgrass gives the smoothie much of those damage-fighting nutrients, and a mix of added proteins helps the body recover after a hard training session. “It’s a staple in my diet because it works,” Call says. “Plain and simple.”

20 ounces water
1 tablespoon Pines Wheat-grass Powder ($32 for ten ounces)
1 teaspoon organic extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 tablespoons raw honey, agave nectar, or maple syrup
1 tablespoon custom protein powder: 40 percent native whey protein isolate, 40 percent micellar casein, 20 percent egg white ($16 for one pound)
1 dash each of vanilla extract and Stevia to taste
