Get a daypack and a hydration pack in one. The Helena is the perfect size for long day hikes, and its insulated pocket kept water in the three-liter reservoir (included) cool during a four-hour hike in New Mexico. Its quick-access outer pocket easily stored extra layers along the way, and internal dividers prevented lunch crumbs from getting on the camera. 2.5 lbs, 1,300 cu in;

Bonus: The compact design works great as an everyday urban pack, too.

Bummer: It's a tad heavy for the capacity.
