The exteriors of these jackets are abrasion-resistant and stretchy. In lieu of lining, they have a thin layer of synthetic insulation. They range from spartan and highly packable to fully tricked out and ski-resort ready. Most can withstand light rain or snow for a few hours.

BEST FOR: Skiing in dry conditions, snowshoeing.

WHY THIS ONE: The Eddie Bauer First Ascent Hyalite is warm and packable enough to cram in your bag, but it can also pick up the pace: underarm panels diffuse heat during activities like backcountry skiing.
