China’s Dongfeng team won a closely fought stage six to Newport, Rhode Island, in the Volvo Ocean Race on Wednesday, the AP reports.

Dongfeng beat overall race leaders Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing in the 5,010-nautical-mile (nm) leg, leaving the team in a good position to win the overall race with three stages left. The Chinese boat came back after a broken mast 200 nm off South America’s Cape Horn disqualified them from that stage.

“I’m very proud of them and very happy to take this first place,” skipper Charles Caudrelier told the AP. “They worked very hard to get this boat ready. I’m really, really happy.”

The boats will dock for ten days in Newport for maintenance before the next trans-Atlantic leg to Lisbon, Portugal.
