First Brewery Awarded Wastewater Certification
Oregon-based Hopworks became the first-ever brewery to receive a Salmon-Safe certification from environmental nonprofit Salmon-Safe, according to Smithsonian. Salmon-Safe awarded the eco-label to the brewery for treating its wastewater before flushing it back into the rivers. Because the amount of water used in the brewing process is four times more than the amount of beer produced, according to Smithsonian, Salmon-Safe believes that treating and recirculating the water into rivers is important for the environment.
Black Lives Matter Rethinks Marathon Protest Plans
On Thursday, the St. Paul, Minnesota, chapter of Black Lives Matter (BLM) agreed not to disrupt this weekend’s Twin Cities Marathon, according to KARE 11 News. As Outside reported on Monday, the group planned to stage a protest against police brutality and anticipated hundreds of participants to show at the finish line of the race. Critics were unhappy with the plan, saying it was “not a productive way to get [the BLM] message out.” After leaders of the local chapter met with St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, they said that BLM still plans to protest at the marathon but will not interfere with participants.
Owners of the USA Pro Challenge Step Down
The owners of the USA Pro Challenge, the U.S. version of the Tour de France, gave up control of the race, the Denver Post reported on Wednesday. Father-and-son team Richard and Rick Schaden started the cycling race in 2011, but the race did not prove profitable, losing anywhere between $2 million and $10 million each year. Race organizers are now searching for multiple investors to contribute to the USA Pro Challenge, according to the Denver Post.
New Women’s Dyno Record Set
At the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cup in Belgium last weekend, 16-year-old Celine Cuypers set a new women’s dyno world record by springing 7.8 feet between bouldering holds, according to according to Gripped. She beat the previous record of about 7.2 feet, set in 2012 by Canadian boulderer Elise Sethna, Cuypers posted on her blog.
WATCH: VR Grand Canyon Documentary Trailer Released
The trailer for As It Is: A Grand Canyon VR Documentary was released by 360 Labs on Friday. The documentary will use virtual reality (VR) to take viewers on a tour of the Grand Canyon in an effort to reduce traffic to the park and help preserve it, Outside reported in May. This project marks one of the first VR advocacy projects in history. Watch the trailer here:
