You likely saw it last week: the sexy seven-passenger Tesla Model X SUV, with falcon-wing doors and an electric engine capable of hitting 60 miles per hour from a dead stop in 3.2 seconds and going 250 miles per charge. That's all super cool, but it turns out the thing will also be great for people who like to get outside.

Full-time AWD means you'll have no problem getting to the ski lodge or camping spot, and no motor up front means there's tons of extra room for all your kit and luggage. Skis and bikes go on a special accessory rack that attaches in less than 10 seconds, according to the company. The car also has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

It's bank-vault safe, too. The floor-mounted battery provides a low center of gravity and structural rigidity. The entire hood area is an effective crumple zone, and radar, sonar, and cameras scan the environment to help drivers avoid accidents.
