The Appalachian Mountain Club's Gorman Chairback Lodge and Cabins opened in January on the shore of Long Pond in the Moosehead Lakes region, surrounded by 66,000 acres of protected wilderness and more than 70 miles of trails. Bring your fly rod to fish for wild brook trout in nearby ponds, or borrow one of the lodge's canoes and paddle around. After dinner—served communally and usually capped with homemade dessert—sit on your cabin's porch watching the stars go nuts. Sunday: repeat.

NEAREST AIRPORT: Portland, three hours.
EXPENSE REPORT: Two nights at the Gorman Chairback Lodge, including all meals (outdoors.org): $456. Two fishing licenses (maine.gov/ifw): $22. Gorp: $5. Bottle of wine: $10. Total: $493

It's great to see Greenville and Piscataquis County featured in Outside Online, but it's actually quite a bit more accessible if you fly into Bangor International Airport which is just over an hour and a half away.
