Great Family Adventures: Abercrombie & Kent's 'Grand Canyon Adventure'

Yes, we know: The family vacation is a much-parodied event, and perhaps rightfully so. But fumbles, foibles, and hassles aside, families keep taking them for the same good reason: They’re priceless sources of memories.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Colorado River makes for one of the world’s best float trips—it’s a must-do for adventurous families. During this 12-day tour, groups experience Grand Canyon National Park from both important angles: up along the ancient rim and down on the shimmering river. In either spot, the 2,000-foot cliffs won’t fail to dazzle (and may well instill a passion for geology in young, impressionable minds). Zion National Park is also on the agenda, as is glitzy Vegas, weathered Bryce Canyon, and a four-wheel-drive exploration of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, during which you can take in waterfalls, rock formations, and archeological sites away from the national-park hordes. Two days of unscheduled time lets your family kick up the adventure a notch—or just relax in these beautiful surroundings.
