Great Family Adventures: Paragon Guides' '2-Day Classic Rock-Climbing Workshop'

Yes, we know: The family vacation is a much-parodied event, and perhaps rightfully so. But fumbles, foibles, and hassles aside, families keep taking them for the same good reason: They’re priceless sources of memories.

HIGHLIGHTS: If your kids have expressed the remotest interest in rock-climbing, by all means take them to learn how. Paragon’s teachers include Outward Bound and NOLS instructors, national-park rangers, and accomplished mountaineers. They’re all thoroughly trained to deal with all ages and levels, even small children and total beginners. This experience unfolds in Colorado’s central Rockies, and leaves its participants more confident and skilled. You’ll get personalized training in belaying and repelling, rope-handling, gearing up, and, of course, safety. In addition to learning basic techniques, you’ll also hear some historical climbing tales along the way.

OUTFITTER: Paragon Guides is a backcountry outfitter that, since 1978, has been operating under a special-use permit from the White River National Forest along the 10th Mountain Division Hut System.

ITINERARY: Stays in the greater Vail area.

DATES: Custom dates available.

PRICE: Starting at $160 per person per day, including ground transportation, lunch, rock-climbing instruction, and gear rental. The “night-out” option includes car-camping by the cliffs, dinner, breakfast, and use of camping gear.
