Hardwick, Vermont

Next Big Thing

No town holds Vermont’s locavore credentials quite so dear as Hardwick, a small (pop. 3,200) former granite-mining town northeast of Burlington. Starting a few years back, the place basically reinvented itself as one large co-op, with vibrant community-agriculture programs, a year-round farmers’ market (no small accomplishment in northern Vermont), and a program that rents kitchen space to local food producers. It also serves as the gateway to the wild, woolly Northeast Kingdom: from downtown, you’re just 20 minutes from skiing in Stowe, fly-fishing near Johnson, and mountain biking in East Burke.

Hardwick is also home to the Hardwick Trails, a wooded, 10k community hike/bike/nordic ski trail that is community supported and always free. With varying degrees of nordic challenge from easy gliding to "the Screamer", it is an amazing resource full of wildlife and both rare and common plant life.

There is no doubt this is just marketing created by the 5 owners of the 5 businesses that make up the "vibrant community".

ok, pretty awesome to see a former/current haunt listed as a top town to live. and pretty funny. hardwick is bi-cultural: amazing people & plans & co-op resources and where you'll find rubber burn-out doughnuts in town, on back roads, ignorant & uneducated people who want to stay that way... but, interesting to see and i hope he town stays invigorated and that some of the old-guard open their eyes and add what they have to offer!

We don't have a Starbucks or an Audi dealership but there are several nice homes for sale. Check out PicketFencePreview.com for more information on homes for sale by owners or pick up the latest Picket Fence Preview magazine. The May issue will be hitting the stands over the next couple of days. You can find one at many of the small businesses around the state and in all of the Shaws Supermarkets. There's a nice 3 bedroom ranch for sale on Putnam Ave. (just up the street from the Hardwick Trails)
