Q:

The Best Road Biking in the U.S.: Hill Country, Texas

I live in the Midwest and want to get to another part of America for some epic road biking. I’ve ridden in the Colorado Rockies a bit. Where else would you recommend?

A:This rolling region west of Austin is one of Lance Armstrong's training grounds, but you don't have to be a pro to enjoy it. It’s got everything you could want in long-distance rides: twists and turns, hills, wide-open vistas, and quaint, friendly old towns founded by German settlers who made their way to this fertile swath more than a century ago.

GREAT RIDE: Jump on the roughly 70-mile Fredericksburg to Kerrville Loop. Founded by German settlers, the bustling tourist town of Fredericksburg is the Hill Country's cycling capital. This leg-burning ride takes you up the elevator-steep Guadernales Ledge on the return half.
