Deep in Maine’s Hundred-Mile Wilderness, the Appalachian Trail runs into the Gulf Hagas Loop, an eight-mile day hike through a dramatic slate gorge. Highlights include sheer vertical drops, waterfalls, two river fordings, and natural pools that form swimming holes. The easiest access is from Katahdin Iron Works Road, off Route 11.
