Best New Glades

Big Sky, Montana

The resort’s recent expansion is small but impressive. These five new trails on Andesite Mountain include Shady Chute, a 2,000-foot tree shot through 40-degree steeps, and Wolf Den, a slightly mellower 35-degree pitch. Plan your trip anytime in January, the resort’s snowiest month, when 50 to 100 inches of fresh powder typically blanket the Gallatin Range. But be sure to take a few rides up Lone Peak Tram, which tops out at 11,166 feet and provides access to 4,350 vertical feet of steeps, chutes, and thigh-burning bowls. Thankfully, Big Sky also just opened 3,000-square-foot Solace Spa and Salon, conveniently located beneath Huntley Lodge (massages from $95; bigskyresort.com). Smart Idea: A $98 ticket gets you access to Big Sky and the adjacent Moonlight Basin (moonlightbasin.com), where you can ski 60 new acres of sparsely gladed terrain. Located off the Iron Horse lift, the nine trails offer up 35-to-45-degree pitches and trails as long as a third of a mile.

I have been going to Big Sky for 20+ years and have always enjoyed it. But the cost of tickets is getting out of hand. I can stay in Utah, Snow Basin, and ski considerably cheaper. With the economy the way it is, perhaps that's what I'll do this year.

I have to agree with Jerry. I have been riding Big Sky for several years and it seems each year prices go up and they attract less and less locals. Big Sky does not do anything for their local community and the discounts they have offered each year get worse. I realize they make money off of people on vacation but it is a slap in the face to see the price train getting out of control. A good example of Boyne not giving a carp.

Their season pass prices have dropped considerably over the last few years. Day tickets are expensive, but offering pre season pass prices under 800 dollars for early season rates is hardly anything to complain about. If you don't like it, go back to Bridger.

The price is expensive for a day ticket, but not if you purchase the frequent sky card, and there are so many good deals with that. The day ticket rate is in line with colorado/jackson hole prices but it also keeps the lift lines short! Ever been to bridger on a pow day? It will make you mad waiting in line to get a chair and then everyone is huffing and puffing behind you to get to the top of the ridge. Big Sky is sick and managed well and i can't wait to get back up there this season!

Jerry and Andy don't know what they are talking about. More locals are skiing Big Sky than ever due to dramatic reductions in season's passes. Big Sky gives away free passes to all the kids in the school K-8 reduces HS pass prices, and offers many ways for locals to work off passes as ski hosts and more. As for them not giving a Carp, I'm not sure why they should get in the business of giving away fish, too.

I go to MSU and always ski big sky... i can get a college pass up there considerably cheaper than at bridger since they dont have a college pass... then i never have to wait in line and i can just hop on the tram to get to the extreme stuff instead of hiking... and the comment about not giving to their community is not true... almost every big event on campus is partially sponsored by big sky... something bridger wont do even after they slap us in the face with no college pass... i cant speak about going on vacation up there since ive never really done it but the one time i stayed in the hotels at the mountain it was amazing... take it from a local its one of the best resorts in the country

Jerrry and Andy are fogey second homers who whine about tissues, and the limited grooming on powder days. Go ski utah. I'll take the epic wipeouts in january and wipe the blood off on my sleeves. Boyne is the only corporation in our area that arrived unscathed after the recession. You guys have no idea the loans they had to take out to make everything work. Big Sky even loaned moonlight a HUGE amount of resources to keep the north summit snowfields open last year, just so they could keep their word about the "biggest skiing in america". That's not even counted acreage, it's just some of the gnarliest skiing on the mountain. we are a secret. you pay $$$ to keep it.
