A Skier's Journey to Japan

On March 11, 2011, an underwater earthquake that measured 9.0 on the Richter scale caused a tsunami that may have killed an estimated 20,000 people in Japan, flattened tens of thousands of homes and businesses, and led to a disaster at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant with effects that are still being studied. Tourism in the country declined by roughly 30 percent in 2011, with 6.2 million international visitors. In 2012, the industry began to rebound, but Japan Tourism would like to see more visitors. It's easy to imagine that the first episode of A Skier's Journey, which was filmed in Niseko, Hokkaido, will inspire a healthy dose of skiers to visit the country this winter. If you need a guide on where to go and when to visit, check out Frederick Reimer's Outside article, "Night-Ski Hokkaido."
