Atacama Extreme: Hitting the Gorges

"Nobody likes to run on pavement," Ray Zahab said. "Expecially when it's 38 degree celsius pavement."

Zahab's plans to run offroad across the Atacama desert were rudely interrupted by a huge gorge. Instead, he ran 21 km down the Pan-Pacific highway on little to no shoulder, between speeding trucks and a steep cliff. The interruption added another 35 km to his trip. For more on the run, check out today's video dispatch.

--Bob Cox and Ray Zahab will be sending daily updates as Ray runs roughly 40 miles a day for 16 days across one of the driest places on earth, the Atacama Desert. For more on their journey, check out atacamaextreme.com.

"... plans were rudely interrupted by a huge gorge..." They spent 6 months planning this trip, then after they started, this huge gorge suddenly appeared out of nowhere? I suspect the gorge has been there all along. This reads like a press release for Evel Knirvel; I would rather be informed of what Ray is doing. Miles travelled, how is he being supported ... facts are still a good thing.
