Early Season Death on Aconcagua

The climbing season on the highest mountain outside the Himalayashas just begun and the first death has already occurred. Americanclimber, Michael Nimitsil died during his descent.

The 39-year-old climber had attempted the summit twice and on histhird attempt was returning when he is reported to have become lost in a snowstorm.Already this season nine climbers have been evacuated for variousphysical reasons.

Aconcagua is located in Argentina near the border with Chile. It isthe highest mountain in South America at 22,841' and one of the 7Summits.  It is not part of the Andes Mountain range but on an adjacentrange thus stands out prominently above the surrounding peaks. It isnotorious for extreme weather especially harsh temperatures and extremewinds. Even though Aconcagua is considered an "easy' high altitudeclimb and a precursor to Everest;  every year there are rescues, frostbite and worse.

Five climbers died in January, 2009 alone: 2 were caught in a stormat 22,000', another died from a fall while descending solo on thePolish Glacier, the third of a heart attack near the summit (however aneyewitness reports a hard fall where the victim hit his head so it maynot have been a heart attack)and finally a solo climber died from afall at 16,200'. In 2000 four climbers died on the Polish Direct whenone climber fell taking the others down with him to their deaths.

This post has been updated to correct the climber's name and to remove the descent route as the Polish Glacier.

Hi First of all let me correct you about his name : MICHAEL NIMITSIL. Then, I would like you to read the letter of the last climber who was with him at the summit and draw your own conclusions. This climber sent the letter and his picture (taken with Michael´s camera) to me. I am Michael´s ex girlfriend living in Buenos Aires and I think this case need further investigation. Thanks http://www.alpinismonline.com/alp-notas.asp?id=10198

I think it may be worth checking www.7summits.com forum and read some of the posts by this guy (and some of the rebuttal by fellow climbers). (Mike1 is the username as far as I can see) It may open the eyes somewhat to what his ambitions were Tom

Hi Tom I am Michael Nimitsil´s ex GF I would like to know what his ambitions were. In that forum which Michael always used at home, he was eagerly asking for a partner. He was thinking about routes. As a person who has beenwith Mike for over nine years I can tell you his ambition was to be the first Thai climber to step on Aconcagua summit. BTW I am Argentinian, living in Argentina

As far as I know as many climbers did, he was suggesting routes but in the end he took the normal route. That is to say the easiest one. I would like people not to hurt my and his family feelings by making him look as a suicidal. Inhis last comments in that forum he says :Ï am not a suicidal¨so his ambition, only ambition was to be the first Thai to get the Aconcagua Mount summit. And then of course he was planning to do the seven summits but we are all humans, even the most experienced one may make mistakes or may have fatalities in the summits. Let´s be serious about that, please and have some respect. Thanks

I would like to know how is it that they could not get Michael´s body down yet???? did they identified him because he was carrying his passport as he usually did??? why is it now they can not reach him now??? could they get his passport but now they can not get his body???? His passport was not unreachable ??? his body is unreachable???? What is happening to the local authorities that they do not do anything about the subject???

We have been up the summit just before Xmas and we were told that the weather conditions did not permit to bring down his body yet, but police would attempt to do it once possible. The body is close to the summit. My sympathy to family and friends.

How strange wheather conditions did not allow to bring the body down but you were able to get to the summit ....What about this? : http://www.alpinismonline.com/alp-notas.asp?id=10198

How strange they could not get the body down because of the weather but you were able to get to the summit in such bad weather conditions.... let´s have a look at this: http://www.alpinismonline.com/alp-notas.asp?id=10198

I have reached the summit on the 17th December 2009 and I have seen Michael's body on the lower end of the summit. When I have seen I couldn't help anymore, I left shocked very fast the summit. What I don't understand is the discussion about the weather. On the 14, 16 and 17th December the weather was good and every day some climbers reached the summit. Just on the 15th of december it was very windy but with less clouds. Deepest sympathy to the family and friends.

Klaus, I am mike´s ex GF would like to contact you if you do not mind.

Klaus the discussion about the weather has to do with the explanation the chief of the rescue patrol gave that they could not get the body down because of the bad weather conditions, that is what they said in all the newspapers.

Hi Mariel, I didn't mean to cause offence with my comment above, but my recollection of the discussions on the board is of worry about the nature of his questions and plans. I myself had voiced concerns on that board. I have been to Aconcagua and even the 'easy/normal' route is far from easy. I do sympathize for your loss. Mortality at a young age is always a tragedy, and can happen to the most experienced people too. Klaus, regarding weather and retrieval of his body, I would hasten to add that it is hard enough to carry yourself at 6962m of altitude and you need to be in peak physical condition with at least 15-20 people to rescue a person from a small peak at sea level safely, so to retrieve a person from nearly 7000m is quite a logistical nightmare.

Hello Mariel, if you want to contact me, please ask Mr. Carlos Gonzalez for my e-mail adress. I send it to him. Tom, I don't want to criticize the work of the rescue team or somebody else. I am sure it is very hard to get somebody down from the summit, it is associated with a huge physical and logistical effort and it is dangerous for the rescuer too. Everybody can die on the Aconcagua and all the climber know the risk. With my comment I just wanted to inform that the weather was good for climbers to go to the summit on 14th, 16th and 17th of december 2009 without a judgment.

Thanks Klaus I will certainly ask Carlos for it. We are in constant contact, thanks in advance!

Here just a sort of Everest junkie but have read all and count the costs. not rich enough , maybe the trek someday. not sure if Mallory and Irvine would be impressed by the current group.I guess still a risk.

Why is there so much mystery aroused Michael Nimitsil's death? Apparently the authority is more concerned in reserving the integrity of the mountain and not the integrity of my friend Michael. I was blown away when I got the news a few weeks ago. I also think that if people were on the mountain the day he was reported dead the weather was clear. Why did no one make an attempt to reach him then. All of his gear was stolen by the scavengers on the mountain this information appeared to be given freely. what is the information the authorities are reluctant to reveal?

Why has there been no reports on the cause of Michael Nimitsil's death? The authorities evidently don't understand that there are many people who loved Michael and we want answers. not the answers they want to give us. We want the truth!
