Karl Meltzer Runs 2064-mile Pony Express Route

Ultrarunner Karl Meltzer finished running the 2064-mile Pony Express route on Monday morning, News Press Now reports.

Meltzer completed the Red Bull-sponsored run from Sacramento, CA to St. Joseph, MO in 40 days, averaging 4.81 miles per hour, according to Ultrarunning.com. That includes the time he spent playing nine holes of golf on day 37; he shot a 44.

“I’m going to sit down for a minute,” Meltzer told reporters after he crossed the finish line in front of Missouri's Pony Express Museum. “I feel good, but I’m glad it’s over.”

Meltzer can add this run to an already impressive ultrarunning résumé; he's won twenty-nine 100-mile races, and currently holds the record for fourth fastest crossing of the 2,174 mile Appalacian Trail at 54 days 21 hours 12 minutes.
