Kenya Announces Olympic Marathon Teams

Athletics Kenya announced their Olympic marathon teams today, and in what may be the biggest surprises, they left off world record holder Patrick Makau and New York City marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai. Since the commission had no set published criteria for picking it's winners, and more than a handful of runners who had an argument for being included, there had been rampant speculation across the web as to who would be picked.

"We have selected the athletes based on their individual performances after the major Marathon races they have participated in this season with a lot of emphasis on experience," Athletics Kenya President Isaiah Kiplagat said. Let the second guessing begin...

Makau may have been hurt by dropping out of last week's London Marathon, and Mutai for dropping out of Boston at mile 18. On the women's side, Sharon Cherbot, the winner of this year's Boston Marathon, and Florence Kiplagat, the winner of last year's Berlin marathon, did not make the team. The takeaway? With only three marathon spots for each country, some of the best runners in the world will be missing from the 2012 Olympics.

Stay tuned for more analysis of the picks from Outside's Peter Vigneron.
