Try holding a weight in each hand - one up and one down. Hold a heavier weight in your down hand and the lighter in your raised hand. This will cause you to engage your core more to stabilize yourself from side to side. Switch hands on the way back.

Is it OK that your knee is extended beyond the tips of your toes when you lunge? I was always taught that that was dangerous for your knees.
