Malibu to Become First World Surfing Reserve

On October 9 Malibu's Surfrider Beach and its vicinity will be officially declared the first World Surfing Reserve, Transworld Surf reports. The area has been plagued by poor water quality over the past few decades, but proponents of the reserve hope that the designation will inspire concerted efforts to reverse the trend.
"These special surf spots are the Yosemites of the coast," Dean LaTourrette, executive director of the Save the Waves Coalition, said. "People need to understand how valuable and fragile they are."
A ceremony will be held at sunrise, followed by a paddle out to First Point and an official dedication by Malibu's mayor and the California coastal commissioner.
