Mugs Stump Award Applications Now Being Accepted

Climbers looking for funding help on fast and light alpine expeditions can now apply for a Mugs Stump Award. This year's winners will receive a portion of $25,000 in total funding. The grants will go to "individuals and teams whose proposed climbs present an outstanding challenge—a first ascent, significant repeat or first alpine-style ascent—with special emphasis placed on climbers leaving no trace of their passage."

Stump came to climbing late, at the age of 26, but threw himself wholeheartedly into the sport and went after everything from big walls to ice to high alpine faces. He put up difficult first ascents from Alaska to Antarctica. He was a mentor to Conrad Anker, and had plans to conquer the Shark's Fin of Meru Central—which Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk climbed in 2011—before he died during a crevasse fall on Denali in May 1992. At a memorial service in Salt Lake City, his friends and colleagues brought up the idea of an award in his honor. The first grant was given in 1993, and several have been given out since.

For more on Stump's accomplishments, read Michael Kennedy's story, "The Dream." (The story appears about a quarter of the way down the The Cleanest Line blog.)

To download and fill out an application, go to mugsstumpawards.com. The deadline for submissions is December 14, 2012.
