Olympic Skeleton Athletes Seek Edge With Science

Planning on watching the Olympic Skeleton events scheduled for today and tomorrow? When you see the US team hit the track, they're doing so with an added advantage. As they prepared for the 2010 games, the team traveled to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York to train in a wind tunnel.

Timothy Wei and others at the institute were able to measure drag on a variety of gear and suits, allowing the team to be at its fastest for the competition.

Wouldn't it make sense for all Olympians to have the benefits of the wind tunnel? I realize it costs money but I think it's odd we (USA) place so much emphasis on medals at the Olympics and yet it's still news when an athlete takes advantage of a wind tunnel to perfect their form or gear. Shouldn't this be standard nowadays???
