Kelly Slater, 40, beat Gabriel Medina, 19, in the finals of the Volcom Pro to win the 49th tour event of his career at Cloudbreak in Fiji. To add some perspective to those numbers, the 11-time world champion has been surfing the famed spot since 1990, three years before his opponent was born.

“It’s about time I got him,” Slater said. “He had my number in the back half of last year and he’ll probably go on to beat everyone for the next 20 years. He can do it all and I think he proved that to a lot of people this week at Restaurants and out here at Cloudbreak.”

Slater moved from eighth place up to second place in the ASP standings. He's 1,050 points behind current world number one Mick Fanning, who finished third at the event.

The Volcom Fiji Pro gained a lot of attention last week when the ASP ended day three early—after round two heats finished—due to a large swell. Some surf websites and forums cried foul at the ASP's decision to suspend the event, which prevented surfers from competing against each other in big conditions. Freesurfers who had flown into Fiji for the big waves welcomed the news. They got a chance to surf in front of the audience watching  live on Volcom's site.

You can watch a highlight video and an interview with Slater below.
