Surfer Stephanie Gilmore secured her fifth ASP women's world title after beating out 19-year-old Tyler Wright in the finals of the Roxy Pro Biarritz. The 25-year-old Australian won four titles from 2007 to 2010, but dropped to number three in the world in 2011. A few weeks after the 2010 tour ended, she was attacked outside of her Coolangatta, Australia, apartment and suffered a broken wrist that kept her out of the water for eight weeks and affected her outlook. In 2012, she was back at 100 percent.

“This year for me was all about improving my consistency and having fun with my surfing,” Gilmore said. “From when I started five years ago to where we are now, women’s surfing has improved so much. It’s an honor to be back up top as these girls push me every day and are all incredible surfers.”

The only other surfers in the history of the ASP to win five or more titles are Kelly Slater and Layne Beachley. Slater has 11 on the men's side and Beachley took home seven on the women's tour. Beachley believes Gilmore has a good chance to eclipse her record.

"She's still got plenty of time to win more," Beachley told Perth Now. "She's loving what she's doing so as long as she's in that state of mind I have little doubt that she'll smash my record and go close to equalling Kelly's."
