Kelly Slater moved into third place in the overall ASP standings when he won the Hurley Pro at Trestles on Thursday. "I feel like I’ve had so many good years at Lowers and the pressure is really on every year to make the final—I feel like it’s been like that since I’ve been on tour," said Slater. "It’s cool to win the 50th here. I won my first event as a pro here and it’s great to get this win.”

That first win came 22 years ago, in 1990. Since then, he's won the event four additional times. This year, the 40-year-old, 11-time world champ beat Australian Joel Parkinson in a final round with three- to five-foot waves. Current world number one, Mick Fanning, lost to Slater in a semifinal round.

“Kelly and I both knew what was going on and if I got on top from there the title race would have just been further away,” Fanning said. “He surfed a really smart heat and threw caution to the wind and it paid off."

The seventh of 10 ASP World Tour events will begin on September 28 off the southwest coast of France.
