SOG Blade Light Folder: Slices and Dices, Even in the Dark

SOG_BLT-50

Boyscout blades are a dime a dozen, but SOG’s Blade Light Folder (BLT-50N) takes camping knives to a new level.

This steel-blade folding knife has six LED lights, three molded into the handle on either side of the blade, to light up whatever it is you’re slicing shadow-free. Fold the blade up when you’re done fileting your fish or cutting your Camembert for the evening, and you have a 35-lumen flashlight—bright enough to get you to the outhouse and back to your tent.

The knife takes two standard AAA batteries that power the lights for about 4.5 hours. When you don't need 'em, you can turn the lights off with a simple push button.

Best of Interbike: 2013 Cycling Apparel We're Excited About

We're still digging through our notes from Interbike. In addition to our Gear of the Show picks, a flurry of cool new bikes, and stacks of interesting-looking accessories, we also saw lots of good looking new apparel in Vegas. Here's a sampler of what we can't wait to wear.

Rapha Long Sleeve Brevet Combo

RAPHA LONG SLEEVE BREVET JERSEY ($300)
Just in time for autumn, Rapha unveils a sharp, new full-length rendition of its pavement-tested Brevet jersey. That's brevet, as in 200-kilometer-plus randonneuring rides, which explains the voluminous storage, including the standard triple back pockets and two zipper compartments, front and rear. The high-vis pink and white stripes are stylish but tame enough for most riders, while the included matching pink vest might be a bit much for some. We love the looks of both, and we'll be riding in them all fall to see if they're as comfy as they are fetching.

Forest Service Fights Goats With Paintballs

Visitors to Washington's Olympic National Forest no longer need fear the wrath of the mountain goat. A trail on Mount Ellinor had to be closed last July after several groups of hikers reported encounters with exceptionally aggressive mountain goats. In an effort to teach them to fear humans once again, Forest Service employee Kurt Aluzas used a combination of repellant spray, shouting, and paintballs to force the goats back from the trail. Authorities blame the goats' aggressive behavior on increased human contact and are warning visitors not to feed the animals. (One hiker was even gored to death in 2010.) Anyone encountering a goat is advised to stand their ground and shout aggressively in the animal’s direction.

Manatee Rider Found and Charged

In Florida, it is illegal to ride a manatee. Which is why 52-year-old Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez turned herself in to the authorities after she was photographed floating through the water on the back of one of the aquatic herbivores. After reports of a manatee-riding woman on Sunday at Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas County, police released photos they’d obtained of the incident in hopes of identifying the joyrider. Gutierrez saw the photos and turned herself in, maintaining she was new to the area and unaware of the manatee-riding restrictions. (The Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act states that it is a second-degree misdemeanor to “intentionally or negligently annoy, molest, harass, or disturb” the endangered species.) She was charged but not arrested, and the case will be forwarded on to the State Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The ridden manatee was not injured.
