The Boat That Folds Into a Backpack
Ar Vag. Photo: Be Open
Thibault Penven, a student at the University of Art and Design Lausanne, created a fold-out dinghy that works as a shuttle between the shore and a ship. In just a few minutes, a flat contraption that can be carried like a backpack can be converted into a plastic boat. You can see in the video below that it works, and least for holding one really skinny European.
The boat measures 94 inches long by 57 inches wide when open. When folded up, it is 43 inches by 23 inches wide, and just eight inches thick. The hull is made up of a series of Fiberglas sheets covered in a heat-welded tarpaulin. A wooden board braces the center. Tent poles keep the sides rigid. The name for Thibault's invention is "Ar Vag," which translates to "boat" in Breton, a Celtic language spoken in Brittany, France.
Thibault presented his boat in June at Design Miami/Basel.
