The Top 10 Worst Crashes of All Time

In light of our November feature on fear ("FLAT" by Jennifer Kahn) about Scott Macartney's near-death crash during a ski race, it's time we take a look at some other heart-stopping "yard sales." From snowboarding into boulders to an entire peloton running directly into over a bystander, these videos were selected based on pure reaction. If the crash/fall/splat/slip made me hold my breath (and my stomach), giggle a little (out of nervousness), and cover my eyes all at the same time, it made the list. Or, if the crash seemed like the stuff of legend (i.e. skateboarder Jake Brown's forty-foot fall), it was a no brainer.

Now, for the top 10 worst crashes of all time (in no particular order). You might think twice about getting back on the horse after watching these. I'm just sayin'.

#10: Snowboarding: The sport's "hardest" crash. Maybe try snow next time?

#9: Mountain biking at its finest. That one hurt.

#8: Marathon running: I'd take a fall like that if I could have his marathon time.

#7: Rock climbing: Worth all the drama shots before the fall. Promise.

#6: Skateboarding: Award goes to Jake Brown. Duh.

#5 Slacklining. Thanks to Gibbon Slacklines for helping me uncover this nausea-inducing footage.

#4 Road Cycling: Do you feel worse for the cyclists or for the cop?

#3 Surfing: Dude. Brah. Gnar. And stuff. But, also winner of Surfer's 2009 Worst Wipeout of the Year Award.

#2 Kitesurfing. This category wins for most crash videos on YouTube.

#1 Ski Racing. Possibly one of the most disturbing crash videos ever. To read about the aftermath, check out the article "FLAT" from our November issue.

Do you agree with my picks above? If not, sound away below. Post links to your favorite crash videos.

Am I the only one disturbed by videos where people were obviously seriously injured? Like the mountain biker? A definite low-brow for an otherwise great blog.

Ouch, ouch, ouch! Makes my mince pie induced heartburn feel very petty indeed.

I'm torn between really disliking this stuff and not being able to not watch.

Anders, I wasn't hurt as bad as you might think from that fall. In fact, if you google my name (miles todd) and the word crash you'll find plenty of info on the fall and the aftermath. I can't really say I'm proud to be on the list of worst crashes of all time, but I do admit to seeing some humor in it. As a side note, I've been trying to get some friends to ride that trail again with me for the anniversary of that crash on January 1st...

I think I pulled a muscle just flinching.

"Fun" as it is to watch this stuff, it's horrifying to find myself part of a "celebration" of body-wrecking and possibly life-ending accidents. And in most cases with no followup info on the condition of the victims. This isn't a movie, it's real life. (Though some of these guys may be real life "Jackasses", we have no way of knowing that when we watch these videos.) Glad to hear that the biker is OK, but I hope he walked his bike around that bad spot if he found someone to go on his anniversary ride.

Anybody and everybody I know that participates in any of the sports celebrated by Outside has had more than a few "ouch!" moments, some worse than others for sure, but without exception, we all can't help but look back and laugh at ourselves, and in the rare cases when we happen to have had a helmetcam rolling, showing off the evidence of our stupidity. Granted, when it crosses the line into serious injury it gets less funny, but anything that we (eventually) walked away from, once the rehab was over and pins removed from the bones -- ultimately we're all secretly proud of our scars and like to show them off. So I'm not sure it makes you a bad person to watch this stuff; I'd say you're just as bad a person for watching "bubble boy's" dad being interviewed, or whatever other celebrity train wreck happens to be youtube fodder. For the record, I'm a university educated professional with a family, and believe in "calculated" risks, not stupidity. But accidents happen, and when I have the helmetcam rolling, I'll post the video and be happy to have people watch it.
