"I don't think there's anything like that thing of walking up to the edge of a new bowl and going up to it like, 'Oh my God. I can't believe that they built this thing and they built it so good,'" says Jeff Ament. "You have that 14-year-old shake where you're so excited that your body can't contain itself, and skating still gives me that feeling."
As this video of a two-year-old catching his first wave illustrates, surfing isn't always about competition. Still, it would be nice for high school surfers to be able to compete in front of crowds in the same way basketball, football, or track athletes do. At least, that's the thinking behind a new high school surf event in San Diego sponsored by Spy and Sun Diego.

Telluride MountainFilm Festival kicks off today— always one of the best reasons to decamp to this gorgeous box canyon in southern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains.
