Contador Stripped of Tour de France Title

Cyclist Alberto Contador has been stripped of his 2010 Tour de France title and suspended from racing for one year due to evidence that he used performance-enhancing drugs last year, according to VeloNews.com. The Spanish Cycling Federation, the organization overseeing the investigation, reports finding trace amounts of the drug clenbuterol in one of Contador's urine samples taken at last summer's Tour.

Contador has ten days to present exculpatory evidence. The 28-year-old cyclist also won the Tour de France in 2007 and 2009. Floyd Landis remains the only other Tour winner to be relieved of his title because of performance-enhancing drugs, which occurred in 2007.

The Wold Anti-Doping Agency lists the drug clenbuterol as prohibted by athletes at any time, whether in or out of competition. Although the European Union banned the drug in 1996, some reports suggest that clenbuterol is still used illicitly by livestock producers.

The Spanish Cycling Federation's revocation of Contador's Tour title represents the latest move by cycling officals to clean up the sport. For more on the fight to rid cycling of illegal drugs, check out Outside's coverage of FDA agent Jeff Novitzky's investigation of Lance Armstrong.

Fitness Guru Jack LaLanne Dies at 96

Jack LaLanne, considered the founding father of the fitness movement, died Sunday at his home in Morro Bay, California, USA Today reports.

LaLanne was known for promoting strength training and healthful eating before they were popular, as well as for his trademark one-piece jumpsuit and a longstanding syndicated exercise show.

"You've got to work at living. Ninety-nine and nine-tenths of Americans work at dying," he'd say, according to USA Today. "You've got to eat right, exercise, and have goals and challenges. Exercise is king; nutrition is queen. Put 'em together, and you've got a kingdom."

On Friday, LaLanne had trouble breathing, and doctors said he had pneumonia. His family brought him home to recover, but nothing worked, and at 4:30 p.m. Sunday he died. But his vision and dedication to the health and well being of Americans lives on.

Read our November 1995 profile of LaLanne to find out what made him such a fitness animal.
