Marketing Manager

Outside is looking for a talented individual to join our marketing department in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The bar for employment is high here at Outside: the editors produce an exceptional product and our entire marketing department needs to be just as passionate, crafty, and intelligent at promoting it.
Job Responsibilities

•    Assist with the development, communication, and execution of print and digital marketing plans, creative briefs, and sales team presentations
•    Produce compelling multi-platform proposals in response to RFPs
•    Help craft promotional materials (print, email, social posts and digital content)
•    Conceptualize, assign, and edit custom content, both digitally and in print
•    Manage vendor and partnership relationships

•    Equally comfortable working on both print and digital platforms
•    The position reports to the marketing director and works closely with our national sales team.

Our ideal candidate will have a familiarity with the outdoor industry and quickly-evolving publishing landscape and 4–7 years of marketing experience. Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, organizational, and verbal communication skills are a must. Bachelor’s degree and knowledge of PowerPoint and Excel are required; Drupal and light HTML a plus. This position is based in Santa Fe, NM—sorry, no telecommuting.

If you're interested, please email your résumé and cover letter to Sam Moulton,, with both your name and "Marketing Manager Position" in the subject line.

Art Director/Graphic Designer
Outside is looking for a talented art director/graphic designer to join our award-winning art department in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Job Responsibilities

  • Designing/art directing and generally overseeing all editorial pages, including illustrations, maps, infographics, and photography.
  • Assigning/art directing and editing still-life photography (shot in-house), illustrations, and portrait, location, and conceptual photography, both commissioned and stock.
  • Meeting and communicating clearly and frequently with editors, copy editors, and the production department on all aspects of art and layouts, including marking up color and checking blue lines.

The position reports to the creative director/design + photography director. Depending on the candidate's experience level, the job may also involve travel for location shoots.

Our dream candidate has a natural talent for typography, a great eye for color, and a fresh and unexpected flair for layout and composition. We will consider designers of all levels but prefer 4–7 years of magazine experience. That said, are you a young designer relatively fresh out of school with strong student work? Apply. With the right candidate, talent, ability, and enthusiasm can overcome slim workforce experience. Ultimately, we're looking for a smart, innovative problem solver who can think on his or her feet, come up with surprising ideas, and handle the fast pace and high standards of an award-wining national magazine within a growing media company.

Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is required. Experience with the K4 publishing environment is a plus.

The mission of Outside is to inspire active participation in the world outside through award-winning coverage of the sports, people, places, adventure, discoveries, health and fitness, gear and apparel, trends and events that make up an active lifestyle.

Outside has always been driven by the search for innovative ways to connect people to the world outside. With the Internet, there's a whole new layer of depth added to that quest, which makes Outside Online a truly exciting place to be right now.

Outside Online slips the bonds of print, so we can offer you a wealth of information in a variety of forms that you can't get anywhere but online. We have all the space, all the media, none of the lag time, and all the dimensions to bring you everything from mountaintop audio clips to up-to-the-minute snow reports to an events calendar to lists of manufacturer contacts to expert answers to your questions.

Back in 1978, a letter in Outside's first issue stated that the magazine was "dedicated to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors," an editorial goal that has stuck ever since. Armed with great writing that's always based on critical thinking and a sharp sense of humor, the magazine has done an amazing job of bringing people in contact with the world Outside. Outside Online takes all of that richness and slaps on the capabilities of the Internet, making the contact that much more dynamic and textured.

Much of that texture comes from you, thanks to the dimension interactivity adds to a reader's relationship with the written word. You determine what our gear and travel experts write about by submitting the questions they answer. In our new bulletin board areas, you'll have the chance to create a vibrant Outside community. You'll join us as active members of the editorial team, creating the site's content by contributing your thoughts, arguments, comments, and wish lists in these community areas.

To do a better job of presenting our content and integrating yours, we've redesigned the site's look and structure, and we think you'll find Outside Online easier and more fun to use in its new form. That form is constantly evolving, so let us know what you'd like to see. We not only welcome your feedback, we rely on it. We hope you share our excitement about Outside Online and its endless possibilities. Please return often to participate and watch us continue to grow.

Contributors' Guidelines

Outside is a monthly national magazine dedicated to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors. Although our features are usually assigned to a regular stable of experienced and proven writers, we're always interested in new authors and their ideas. In particular, we look for articles on outdoor events, regions, and activities; informative seasonal service pieces; sports and adventure travel pieces; profiles of engaging outdoor characters; and investigative stories on environmental issues.

Queries should present a clear, original, and provocative thesis, not merely a topic or idea, and should reflect familiarity with the magazine's content and tone. Features are generally 1,500 to 5,000 words in length. Dispatches articles (100 to 800 words) cover timely news, events, issues, and short profiles. Destinations pieces (300 to 1,000 words) include places, news, and advice for adventurous travelers. Review articles (200 to 1,500 words) examine and evaluate outdoor gear and equipment.

Print Guidelines
Please send queries (not manuscripts) and two or three relevant clips along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Editorial Department, Outside magazine, 400 Market St., Santa Fe, New Mexico, 87501. Due to the amount of ideas we receive, we do not have time to respond to each and every query. If interested in your story, we will respond within six to eight weeks.

Photographers' Guidelines
Outside is a monthly national magazine dedicated to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors. We rely on regular contributors for many images, but we are always open to innovative work that creatively reflects the essence of the magazine.

Features represent the best of outdoor writing and photography. Exposure is a gallery-style section devoted to showcasing exceptionally engaging photography and its creators. Parting Shot, the last image in the magazine, is a signature page that highlights a single image with a humorous twist.

Please send Exposure and Parting Shot submissions as low-res JPGs or a link to a web gallery to
