Social-Media/News Manager, OutsideOnline.com
Outside is seeking a social-media/news manager to join its digital division. Primary responsibilities include planning and executing all content on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Plus, and other social platforms, in addition to planning and executing news content. Candidates should have impeccable writing and editing skills, experience with content-management systems and digital publishing, and a keen understanding of stories that fit the Outside brand.
- Writing social copy that is on-brand and representative of Outside's voice, as well as the ability to create clear calls to action and convey marketing initiatives in social posts.
- Assigning and editing stories for Outside's News channel.
- Publishing content to all social channels using both native platform publishing as well as third-party tools like Buffer.
- Planning and launching the Outside brand on new social-media properties.
- Reporting growth on a regular basis using metrics from both social media dashboards and Google Analytics.
- Working with other departments including print editorial, marketing, and sales.
- Covering major events live in the field.
- Increasing traffic, engagement, and referral traffic.
- 2 years of full-time experience at a digital publication, minimum.
- Proven experience guiding a major brand’s social media strategy.
- Comfort with statistical analysis and traffic analysis.
- Basic Photoshop, HTML, and Google Analytics experience.
- Passion for, and experience with, outdoor sports and news.

Armed with great writing that's always based on critical thinking and a sharp sense of humor, the magazine has done an amazing job of bringing people in contact with the world Outside. Outside Online takes all of that richness and slaps on the capabilities of the Internet, making the contact that much more dynamic and textured.
Much of that texture comes from you, thanks to the dimension interactivity adds to a reader's relationship with the written word. You determine what our gear and travel experts write about by submitting the questions they answer. In our new bulletin board areas, you'll have the chance to create a vibrant Outside community. You'll join us as active members of the editorial team, creating the site's content by contributing your thoughts, arguments, comments, and wish lists in these community areas.
To do a better job of presenting our content and integrating yours, we've redesigned the site's look and structure, and we think you'll find Outside Online easier and more fun to use in its new form. Outside is a monthly national magazine dedicated to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors. Although our features are usually assigned to a regular stable of experienced and proven writers, we're always interested in new authors and their ideas. In particular, we look for articles on outdoor events, regions, and activities; informative seasonal service pieces; sports and adventure travel pieces; profiles of engaging outdoor characters; and investigative stories on environmental issues.
Queries should present a clear, original, and provocative thesis, not merely a topic or idea, and should reflect familiarity with the magazine's content and tone. Features are generally 1,500 to 5,000 words in length. Dispatches articles (100 to 800 words) cover timely news, events, issues, and short profiles. Destinations pieces (300 to 1,000 words) include places, news, and advice for adventurous travelers. Review articles (200 to 1,500 words) examine and evaluate outdoor gear and equipment.
