Pearl Izumi’s Fly Softshell Pant is my choice when temps begin dropping into the single digits or lower. Made from the same polyester softshell that Pearl Izumi uses in its jackets, the Fly Softshells are incredibly warm and wind resistant. And if you overheat, you can open up thigh zips to let off some steam. One note: Pearl Izumi calls them pants, but they fit more like baggy tights.

When the wind is blowing and the snow is flying? I'd recommend sitting in front of the TV with a pair of sweatpants on.

I'm a bit pigeon-toed, which means my feet tend to snag on loose material when I run, so I prefer tights. I've also found that I don't lose much heat off my legs, at least compared to my upper body or even my arms, and unless it drops much below 10 degrees I generally stick with mid-weight tights.

My go-to tights work for both cycling and running. If you both ride and run, my first recommendation is to check out Performance Bicycle's house-brand Radiator Tights ($50). They come without a cycling chamois and are made from a stretchy polyester-Spandex blend that resists wind and wicks moisture. They're warm, but I've used them comfortably in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. Otherwise, take a look at the following three options from Nike, Arc'teryx, and Pearl Izumi.

EveryTrail
This is the one must-have GPS app for adventure travelers. EveryTrail records your route as you hike, bike, run, climb, paddle, ski, or move in any other way. It works anywhere in the world with satellite reception, whether you're in a city or on the Annapurna Circuit. EveryTrail will plot your route on a Google map, and keep stats of your distance, elevation, and speed. More importantly, you can use the app as a resource to find trip reports from other people on great nearby adventures, and get directions to the trailhead. There are upwards of 500,000 trips in the database, and more are constantly being added. The app also lets you upload and share photos from your trip on the fly.
Price: Free.

FlightTrack
You’re always best served by having a standalone flight tracking app that’s easy to access and will update often and quickly—that way, you can tap into your flight information as quickly as possible when you’re in a rush. The best of the bunch is FlightTrack. It follows domestic and international flights, telling you not only the scheduled departure and arrival times, but also when the plane actually leaves the departure gate and when it will actually arrive. A map tracking the plane's altitude and location is a geeky but nice feature. The standard version costs $4.99, but the $9.99 Pro edition will integrate with your TripIt itinerary.
Price: $4.99

Kogeto's DOT, a 360-degree panoramic camera attachment for iPhone 4/4s lets you film everything in front, behind, and all around you. The free Looker app lets you email, tweet, or post the video to Facebook or kogeto.com, where you can grab and rotate the screen to change the direction of the view, or switch to panoramic widescreen mode. Gary May, 43, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government in the April 2010 blast at the Upper Big Branch Coal Mine. A government investigation into the accident found that the mine's operator, Massey Energy, allowed coal dust and methane to build up in the shafts, fueling the explosion. May, who is reportedly cooperating with the government's investigation, is the second Massey employee to face criminal charges in the accident. In October, a federal court convicted Hughie Elbert Stover, the mine's former security chief, of lying to investigators and destroying documents. Peter Skyllberg, 44, had reportedly subsited on nothing but snow and some ointment since December 19. A nearby store-owner who knew Skyllberg said that he had been living in the woods because financial trouble had forced him from town. Passing snowmobilers assumed the car was empty but saw a man wrapped in a sleeping bag in the backseat when they scrapped snow off the window. Doctors speculate that Skyllberg may have benefitted from an "igloo-effect" caused by a thick layer of snow around the vehicle. Another theory is that Skyllberg's body temperature dropped, slowing his metabolism and allowing him to go into a state similar to hibernation. "I suppose it might have been like an igloo, which is why he has managed to get through this cold. We have had down to -30 centigrade here. It is a strange story," said chief medical officer Dr. Ulsetts Berg of the Umeå University Hospital.

Read more at Time

Shark Fin Suppliers Sue CA Over Ban

A group of shark fin suppliers is suing California over a recent state-wide ban on the sale or possession of fins. The San Francisco-based Asian American Rights Committee of California argues that the ban infringes on Congress's authority to regulate interstate commerce. "By outlawing the acquisition, possession, or sale of all shark fins in California, the shark fin ban not only burdens but entirely eliminates this interstate trade," the group said in a filing. On Thursday, President Obama caused a stir when he visited one of the few San Francisco restaurants that still serves shark fin soup; while the ban went into effect in January, the sale of fins already in the state is permitted until July 2013.
